Instructors teaching in classrooms with lecture capture equipment will have those classes automatically recorded. Instructors receive an email from DELTA, prior to the start of the semester, with specific details regarding classroom captures.
This article provides a brief overview of the classroom capture process, and answers some frequently asked questions.
Overview of Classroom Recordings
Instructors teaching in capture-equipped classrooms will have those classes automatically recorded.
Classroom recordings are stored and managed using NC State's Panopto instance. The instructor is the owner of the folder containing their recordings and has full access and control of the classroom recordings. Students attending the class are able to view recordings by default, but should have the folder URL provided to them by the instructor.
Instructors are provided access to their specific Panopto classroom recordings folder before the start of each semester via an email from DELTA. This email provides the direct URL to the relevant recordings folder, which can be shared with students.
Take one of the following actions after receiving that direct URL:
- Opt out of the recordings
- Provide students the folder link
- Adjust folder permissions to meet their specific needs
The physical hardware that is located within classrooms is generally managed by ClassTech. Any issues with those items should be brought to the OIT Help Desk.
DELTA oversees the Panopto service, and are here to help with any issues related to the storage and maintenance of these recordings.
Room Change Information
To change rooms, contact a scheduling officer to ensure the location change is updated in Registration & Records, and that automatic classroom capture will continue.
Content Retention
Due to WolfWare retention policies, content located in the Classroom Capture folder is deleted after the following semester.
To retain recordings for a longer period, move them to the My Folder in Panopto using the instructions in Panopto's "How to Batch Copy and Move Videos" article. Pursuant to NC State regulations, classroom recordings where student(s) may be identifiable should not be reused without the consent of the identifiable student(s).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
These are some often-asked questions about this process, along with additional resources to help instructors manage their Panopto classroom recordings.
I need to give a student(s) the option to watch the class in real time, how can I make the recording a webcast (livestream)?
Panopto has the ability to turn any scheduled recording into a webcast (livestream) so that students can watch what is being recorded in real time. The instructor will need to request that the webcast be turned on for each course offering.
Instructions on how to enable this can be found in the "Enabling and Accessing Webcast for Panopto Classroom Capture" article.
What if I don't want my class recorded?
Instructors have the ability to opt out of these automated classroom captures. To do so they simply need to formally request that their class is opted out via the Classroom Capture Change Portal.
Instructions on how to opt out are available in the "Opting Out of Panopto Classroom Recording" article.
One of my classes has been canceled so I won't need that recording, how do I delete a scheduled recording?
Instructors can manage each recording individually based on their specific scheduling needs.
Follow the instructions in the "Deleting a Scheduled Panopto Recording" article to delete a recording.
My TA can't view the recordings, how do I give them access?
By default only the instructor and those students formally enrolled in the course have access to view these classroom recordings. In order for a TA or other student to view the content they must be given explicit access to the recording folder.
Follow the instructions provided in the "Adding a TA or Student to a Panopto Recordings Folder" article.
I want to give my class access to a previous semesters recordings, how can I give them access all at once?
By default, only the instructor and those students enrolled in a course through SIS have access to view classroom recordings. In order for an entire course section to view previous recordings, they all must be given explicit access to the recording folder. This can be done by adding the entire course roster to the relevant Panopto folder.
Follow the instructions provided in the "Adding an Entire Course Section to a Panopto Recordings Folder" article.
