Instructors can download a blank, printable copy of a Moodle Quiz to allow a student to take the exam in-person, or for other needs.

This article provides options for printing a Moodle Quiz to paper.

Printing a Blank Moodle Quiz Attempt

Moodle does not provide a mechanism for printing blank Quiz attempts. Instead, adjust Quiz settings to a create a blank Quiz attempt, and download it as a printable file.

There are two ways to do this:

Some question types do not print with all of the question's information, or may be created for digital use and aren't applicable on paper. When printing a Moodle Quiz to paper, it's best to use these question types only:

Each of these provides all of the answers directly in the PDF page, or provides an appropriate text field for the student to write into. Some additional configuration of each question type may be needed to ensure that it prints correctly.

Generating a blank attempt sheet

If students have already attempted the Quiz in Moodle, this process may not work. Duplicate the Quiz activity first, then follow these instructions.

To adjust the settings of the Quiz:

  1.  Open the Quiz page.
  2.  In the Quiz menu at the top of the page, click the Settings tab.
  3.  In the Quiz settings page, find and expand the Layout section.
  4.  Set the New page field to the Never, all questions on one page option.
  5.  Enable the Repaginate now field using the checkbox.
  6.  Find and expand the Appearance section.
  7.  Set Question container style to Outlined.
  8. At the bottom of the page, click the Save and display button.

This will set the Quiz to show all questions on a single page, enabling it to be printed using a browser's print settings. The Outlined container style will allow for an empty square instead of a filled-color box, saving on printer ink.

To print a Moodle Quiz:

  1. In the Quiz menu at the top of the page, click the Results tab.
  2. In the drop-down menu that initially says Grades, select the Export attempts option.
  3. In the Display options section, disable the User full name, Email address, and Show default instruction text? options using the checkboxes.
  4. Click the Show report button.
  5. In the export attempts table, in any student's row that hasn't made an attempt, click the Create Attempt button.
  6. In the Confirmation pop-up window, click the Create button.

The page will refresh with an updated table. The student's row will be highlighted to show their attempt is generated.

To get a printable view of that sheet:

  1. In that student's row, click the Attempt sheet link.
  2. At the bottom of the page, click the Print button.

A Print dialogue box will appear with options to configure. Course and Quiz name will appear at the top of the page. Select a printer to print to, or save the page as a PDF to print later.

After printing the Quiz attempt, adjust the settings of the Quiz again to set New page to its original settings.

Using a Quiz preview attempt

To adjust the settings of the Quiz:

  1. Open the Quiz page.
  2. In the Quiz menu at the top of the page, click the Settings tab.
  3. In the Quiz settings page, find and expand the Layout section.
  4. Set New page to Never, all questions on one page.
  5. Ensure the Repaginate now button is checked.
  6. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Save and display button.

This should set the Quiz to place all of its questions on a single page, enabling it to be printed using a browser's print settings.

  1. In the main Quiz page, click the Preview quiz button.
  2. After the preview attempt has loaded, right-click anywhere inside the Quiz.
