How to Use Your NC State Email Alias

NOTE: If you just had an alias request completed, please wait two hours for the alias to finish processing in the system before following the instructions below. If you have not yet requested one, you can do so using the Alias Request Form in the IT Service Portal.

Adding your NC State email alias

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the top-right corner, select Settings (the gear icon).
  3. Select See all settings.
  4. Select the Accounts or Accounts and import tab.
  5. In the "Send mail as" section, select Add another email address.
  6. Enter your name and the email address (your email alias) that you want to send from.
  7. Select the checkbox next to Treat as an alias.
  8.  Select Next Step >>. You are not required to verify and confirm your email address, since Google already knows that the alias belongs to you.
  9. If you want to send emails from your alias by default, select Make default next to your email alias.

Sending emails from your alias

  1.  When writing an email, select the From line. (If you do not see the From line, select the space next to the recipient's email.)
  2.  Select the email address you want to send from.

Updating your email address in the campus directory

The NCSU campus directory will display the email address designated as "Preferred" (normally the "Business" address for active employees) in MyPack Portal. Contact your departmental HR representative if you want to update your email address listing in the campus directory.
