The academic Moodle server is provided for official Registration & Records courses. However, Moodle can also be used for other purposes, such as committee work, student groups, development of future courses, or research projects. Such uses are supported on a Moodle server designated for such projects. Courses on this server are called "Project Spaces" and all NCSU faculty and staff have permission to activate them within a WolfWare space.
Moodle is one of the course tools available through WolfWare, so to activate a Moodle project space, you must first request the WolfWare space, and then activate Moodle (or any other tools) within that space. Before creating a Project Space, faculty/staff must acknowledge that they have read and understood the WolfWare Project Spaces SOP (PDF).
Step 1: Request the WolfWare Space
- Log into WolfWare at https://wolfware.ncsu.edu.
- Navigate to Projects using the tabs under "My WolfWare."
- Click the "Request Project Space" button to access the request form.
- Complete the request form and then click the "Request Project Space" button.
Step 2: Activate Moodle
- On the Course Management screen in WolfWare, available tools will be listed in the "Inactive" section. To activate Moodle, click the "activate" link next to Moodle.
- Configure any desired settings for the project space:
- Shortname: This provides users with a succinct label for your Moodle course. This is typically a shortened version of the full title that Moodle uses for breadcrumbs and other navigation.
- Availability: If desired, set a start and end date for when students (users who have the Student role within the space) should have access to the Moodle space. For many project spaces, there is no need to set any dates here.
- Moodle Course Copier: To copy the content from another Moodle space (a previous course or project space, etc.) into the new Moodle space, select the desired source course from the drop-down menu. Only course content (no student data) will be copied over. You can also start with a blank Moodle space (select Create Blank Course) or a structured Moodle course (select Quick Start Course Shell).
- Click the "Create My Moodle Space" button at the bottom.
After submitting the form, the Project Space will typically be created in one hour or less. Using the Course Copier may increase the time required, depending on the size of the course being copied and how many courses are currently also being copied by other instructors.
