There are three ways to add videos from Panopto to Moodle.

Before choosing Option 2 or Option 3, please refer to Setting Access Permissions on Panopto Videos and Folders to understand how to change Panopto video sharing permissions. There are different sharing options, depending on if a video is to be shared with an individual or to a wider audience. A diagram of the various options is below.

Option 1: Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle

Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle has the following advantages:

When creating a Panopto activity in Moodle for the first time, or when a course gets copied over with a Panopto Activity included, a new folder will be created in Panopto to correspond with the Moodle course. To choose Option 1 to share recordings, and re-use the content for a different semester:

Step-by-step instructions to add Panopto recordings using the Panopto activity
  1. In the Moodle space, turn editing on.
  2. Click "Add an activity or resource."
  3. In the Activities tab, select the "Panopto" icon.
  4. Click "Select content" and select the video to add to Moodle.
  5. Click "Save and return to course" to save the change.

Option 2: Add a video by URL

When adding a URL for a Panopto video, access to those videos can be controlled through Panopto sharing settings. Utilizing the Add a URL Activity in Moodle has the following advantage:

Step-by-step instructions to add a Panopto recording using the URL Resource
  1. In the Moodle space, turn editing on.
  2. In one of the sections on the main course page, click the link for "Add an activity or resource."
  3. Select the "URL" resource, and paste the Panopto URL into the "External URL" field. Save changes.

Option 3: Using the Panopto button in Moodle's HTML editor

When embedding a Panopto video, access to those videos can be controlled through Panopto sharing settings. Utilizing the Panopto button in the HTML editor has the following advantage:

Step-by-step instructions to add a Panopto recording using the Panopto icon in HTML editor
  1. In the Moodle space, turn editing on.
  2. In one of the sections on the main course page, click the link for "Add an activity or resource."
  3. Create the activity or resource that will include the embedded video.
  4. In the field where the embedded video is desired to be placed (such as a Label’s content or an Assignment’s description), click the "Panopto" icon in the HTML editor.
  5. Select the video and click Insert.
  6. Click the "Save and return to course" button to save the change.

Diagram of Sharing Options

This diagram provides an overview of different sharing options.  Video can be shared with an individual or to a wider audience, such as a group, or all of NC State University, or outside of NC State University. Sharing a recording with an individual, a group, or NC State University, requires a Unity ID login to access the video, which allows one to track users’ viewing history.  If recordings are shared outside of NC State University, a Unity ID login is not required to view the recordings; however, one will not be able to track individual viewing history.
