When connecting to the NC State VPN (Cisco AnyConnect), you might encounter an error message that reads "The VPN connection failed due to unsuccessful domain name resolution," after hitting Connect.

This is typically caused by the VPN client trying to establish a connection but not recognizing the server name. This may be caused by a wrong VPN server name, a bad internet connection, or an issue with the VPN client, among other reasons. Follow the steps below to eliminate different common causes of the error.

Enter the correct VPN server on Cisco Anyconnect

First, make sure that the VPN is attempting to connect to vpn.ncsu.edu

  1. Open Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
  2. Erase whatever is currently in the text field (usually "NCSU SSL VPN")
  3. Type vpn.ncsu.edu and select Connect

The VPN client should now allow you to select a group and enter in your login credentials.

Check internet connection

If the VPN client is giving the same error after trying vpn.ncsu.edu, it could be an error with your local network. Ensure that there is an existing internet connection to your device. You should be able to connect to sites such as ncsu.edu, google.com, etc. off of VPN. Contact your internet service provider if you are having internet connection issues off of VPN.

Reinstall Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client

If you have confirmed the device has internet connectivity and that the VPN server is correctly specified, reinstall the VPN client to ensure it is up to date and free of any cached errors.

  1. Uninstall Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
  2. Download and install the latest client on the OIT VPN site
  3. Open the VPN client and follow the steps above on "Entering the correct VPN server on Cisco Anyconnect"
