There are a few ways that Panopto recordings can be shared in a Moodle course. They can be shared using a URL resource, or as an activity type in the course that links directly to the Panopto recording.

This article provides an overview of the options instructors can use to add Panopto content, and instructions for implementing each option.

Adding Panopto Videos in Moodle

Any video from Panopto that the user has "Creator" access to can be added using one of these options.

There are three primary ways to add videos from Panopto to Moodle:

Before using the URL resource, refer to the "Sharing Panopto Videos and Folders" article to understand how to change Panopto video sharing permissions. There are different sharing options depending on if a video is to be shared with an individual or to a wider audience.

Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle

Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle has the following advantages:

When creating a Panopto activity in Moodle for the first time, or when a course gets copied over with a Panopto Activity included, a new folder will be created in Panopto for the Moodle course.

To use the Panopto activity to share recordings, and re-use the content for a different semester, copy recordings from the prior semester's Panopto course folder to the new folder.  See Panopto’s "How to Batch Copy and Move Videos" article for instructions.

Before adding the activity, it must be enabled in the course's activity picker. Follow the instructions in the "Managing LTI External Tools in Moodle" article to enable the Panopto activity to be chosen in the picker.

Add Panopto recordings using the Panopto activity

To add the Panopto activity to a course:

  1. In the top right corner of the Moodle window, turn on the Edit mode switch.
  2. In a given section, click the Add content icon (which looks like a plus sign).
  3. In the drop-down menu that appears, click the Activity or resource option.
  4. In the activity picker, select the Panopto activity.
  5. In the Panopto settings page, click the Select content button.

This opens a pop-up menu with Panopto's interface, and should display the course folder in the top-left corner.

  1. In the pop-up menu, choose how to grade the assignment.
  2. Click the Continue button.
  3. In the top-left corner, use the search menu to find the Panopto folder with the recording to add.
  4. Click on the folder title to reveal the recordings in that folder.
  5. Select the recording by clicking on the thumbnail.
  6. In the bottom right corner of the pop-up menu, click the Insert button.

The Panopto activity editing page should display Content selected with a checkmark to indicate that a video has been selected.

If a grade is being provided from Panopto, enable it in the settings of the activity:

  1. In the settings page, find and expand the Grade section.
  2. Enable the Allow Panopto to add grades in the gradebook option.
  3. Click the Save and return to course button.

The Panopto activity should be added to the course.

If the Panopto activity doesn't provide a grade to the gradebook, follow the instructions in the "Troubleshooting Panopto Grades in Moodle's Gradebook" article.

Re-link Panopto Recordings Using the Panopto Activity

To re-link the Panopto activity in a course:

  1. Navigate to the main course page.
  2. In the top right corner of the Moodle window, enable Edit mode using the toggle.
  3. Navigate to the Panopto recording that requires re-linking.
  4. In the activity menu at the top of the page, select the Settings tab.

Click the Save and return to course button to complete the update.

Using the URL Resource in Moodle

When adding a URL for a Panopto video, access to those videos can be controlled through Panopto sharing settings. Utilizing the URL activity in Moodle means that content does not need to be relinked every semester.

However, permissions in Panopto may need to be updated. To share a Panopto recording with the appropriate users, see the "Sharing Panopto Videos and Folders" article.

Add a Panopto recording using the URL Resource

To add a URL activity linked to a Panopto video:

  1. In the top right corner of the Moodle window, turn on the Edit mode switch.
  2. In a given section, click the Add content icon (which looks like a plus sign).
  3. In the drop-down menu that appears, click the Activity or resource option.
  4. In the activity picker, select the URL resource.
  5. In the page to add a URL, paste the Panopto URL into the External URL field.
  6. Click the Save and return to course button to save changes.

This will create a clickable link the Moodle page that students can use to access the recording.

Embedding Panopto Videos into Text Content

Text content in resources, such as descriptions, activity instructions, or Text and Media Areas, can have Panopto videos directly embedded into their text field. This enables use cases like embedding Panopto videos directly into the course page.

To embed a Panopto video, see the instructions in the "Embedding Video Content in a Moodle Course" article.
