Instructors using Gradescope may need to copy a course, and all the relevant assignments included, to be used in a new semester.
This article will walk through how to properly duplicate a Gradescope course and also how to reconnect the assignments with a copied Moodle space as well.
Copying and Relinking Gradescope Assignments for New Semester
There are a few parts to this process that an instructor will need to complete in order to successfully duplicate their Gradescope course and reconnect everything in a copied Moodle course with Gradescope activities. The instructor will need to:
- Duplicate the already-existing Gradescope course with its relevant assignments.
- Copy the Moodle course from the existing Moodle course to the new WolfWare space.
- Re-link the duplicate Gradescope course with the new Moodle course.
Duplicate the Gradescope Course
First, the instructor will need to duplicate the current Gradescope course and its assignments. If needed, the instructor can build an entire new course and assignments in Gradescope, and link that new Gradescope course to the copied Moodle course instead.
- To duplicate the existing Gradescope course, follow the instructions provided in Gradescope's "Duplicating a Course" article.
- To make a new Gradescope course, follow the instructions in Gradescope's "Using Gradescope with Moodle as an Instructor" article.
After either of these steps have been completed, the new Gradescope course should be available with the assignments needed for the course offering.
Copy the Moodle Course
The next step will be for the instructor to request the new WolfWare space for the next semester. After that, the instructor will copy the old Moodle course with the linked Gradescope assignments over to that new space.
To complete this process:
- Request a new WolfWare Space using the instructions in the "Requesting a WolfWare Space" article.
- Activate a new Moodle course using the instructions in the "Activating WolfWare Tools" article.
- Use the course copier to copy the content from the old Moodle course by using the instructions in the "Copying Content From One Moodle Space to Another" article.
After these steps have been completed, the new Moodle course should have all the Gradescope assignments of the original Moodle course.
Relink Gradescope Assignments in Copied Moodle Course
Once the Gradescope course and assignments have been duplicated or created, and the old Moodle course with Gradescope assignments has been copied over to the new Moodle space, the instructor will need to update the course integration to complete the process.
To do this, they must relink the duplicate Gradescope course and each assignment activity within the new Moodle course. This will ensure grade data is synced to the new Moodle course when grading assignments in the upcoming semester.
To relink the Gradescope course:
- Open the newly copied Moodle course.
- Find the first Gradescope activity listed in the course.
- Click that activity to open Gradescope.
- In the "Link to Moodle Course" pop-up menu, set "Link With" to "An existing Gradescope course".
- In the "Search for a course..." text field, search for the newly created or duplicated Gradescope course.
- In the search list, click the course name to select it.
- Click the "Link Course" button.
- In the "Link to Moodle Assignment" menu, set "Link With" to "An existing Gradescope assignment".
- In the "Search for an assignment..." text field, search for the relevant Gradescope assignment that should link to the Moodle activity listed in the "Moodle Assignment" field.
- In the search list, click the assignment name to select it.
- Click "Link Assignment".
- For each Moodle activity in the course that previously linked to a Gradescope assignment, repeat these steps to re-link them to a duplicated or new Gradescope assignment.
Linking the new Gradescope course will only occur when updating the first activity. Each activity after that only needs to be connected to the right assignment. If the assignment's name was changed in Gradescope, be sure to change the activity's name in Moodle to match the new assignment's name.
Instructors should verify all due dates and other activity/assignment settings are updated and appear correct in both Moodle and Gradescope.
