Please be aware that some of the wording in the messaging shown in this KB may be different than what you see on your computer. However, the actual process is the same.
The Managed Desktop Services group is providing this documentation for converting our macOS users to Microsoft 365. This includes the following steps:
- Removal of existing version(s) of Microsoft Office
- Installation of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook & OneDrive.
- Applying user's Microsoft 365 A3 license.
Removal
- A policy has been created in our cms (configuration management system) that will uninstall previous versions of Microsoft Office. This WILL be triggered automatically at "check-in" based on the installation schedule.
- You will receive the following notifications on your computer. Please read carefully and follow the directions in this message.

Installation
- Microsoft Office can be installed via Self Service or automatically (department's choice). See the offering below:
- The entire suite as one policy - Microsoft Office (All Apps)
- Although we have reduced many of these notifications, you may still see the following "Managed Login Items Added. You can safely close these.
Licensing
- Microsoft Office for macOS requires a user's Microsoft 365 A3 license. This means that you will need to do the following:
- Login with your UnityID@ncsu.edu into one of the Office applications in order to license it. If you don't, the Microsoft Office applications will function in Read Only mode
- If you have multiple local user accounts on a computer, each user account will need to follow the directions above.

Notes
• Dock items will be removed and have to be added back manually by the user.
• Depending on the latest version of Microsoft Office at the time of installation, the automated patching mechanism may fire. No user intervention is required. Current version of Microsoft Office at the time of this note is 16.77.x.
