Instructors may have Panopto recordings that need to be shared through their Moodle course.
This article provides an overview of the various options instructors have to add Panopto content as well as instructions for each of them.
Adding Panopto Videos in Moodle
There are three ways to add videos from Panopto to Moodle.
- Option 1: Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle
- Option 2: Using the URL Resource in Moodle to add a video by URL
- Option 3: Using the Panopto button in Moodle's HTML editor
Before choosing Option 2 or Option 3, refer to Sharing Panopto Videos and Folders to understand how to change Panopto video sharing permissions. There are different sharing options depending on if a video is to be shared with an individual or to a wider audience. A diagram of the various options is below.
Option 1: Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle
Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle has the following advantages:
- Creates a column in the gradebook that connects to Panopto quiz grades.
- Restricts access to users who have access (past or present) to a particular Moodle space.
When creating a Panopto activity in Moodle for the first time, or when a course gets copied over with a Panopto Activity included, a new folder will be created in Panopto for the Moodle course. To choose Option 1 to share recordings, and re-use the content for a different semester:
- Copy recordings from the previous Panopto course folder to the new Panopto course folder.
- Refer to Panopto’s How to Batch Copy and Move Videos article for instructions on how to do this.
- Follow the steps below to add recordings to the new Moodle course.
Add Panopto recordings using the Panopto activity
- In the top-right of the Moodle page, enable "Edit Mode".
- In any section, click on "Add an activity or resource".
- In the Activity picker, select the "Panopto" icon.
- In the Panopto settings page, click the "Select content" button.
- In the window that appears, use the dropdown in the top left to find the relevant Panopto folder the recording is stored in.
- Click on the folder title to reveal the recordings in that folder.
- Select the recording by clicking on the thumbnail.
- In the bottom right corner of the pop-up window, click the "Insert" button.
- In the Panopto settings page, find and expand the "Privacy" section.
- Check the “Accept grades from the tool” setting if Panopto grades should be uploaded to the Moodle gradebook. Otherwise, leave it unchecked.
- Click the "Save and return to course" button to save changes.
The Panopto activity is now added and the associated grade item synced.
Option 2: Add a video by URL
When adding a URL for a Panopto video, access to those videos can be controlled through Panopto sharing settings. Utilizing the URL activity in Moodle means that content does not need to be relinked every semester.
However, permissions in Panopto may need to be updated.
Add a Panopto recording using the URL Resource
To add a URL activity linked to a Panopto video:
- In the top-right of the Moodle page, enable "Edit Mode".
- In any section, click on "Add an activity or resource".
- Select the "URL" resource.
- In the page to add a URL, paste the Panopto URL into the "External URL" field.
- Click the "Save and return to course" button to save changes.
This will create a clickable link the Moodle page that students can use to access the recording.
Option 3: Using the Panopto button in Moodle's HTML editor
When embedding a Panopto video, access to those videos can be controlled through Panopto sharing settings. Utilizing the Panopto button in the HTML editor means that content does not need to be relinked every semester. However, permissions in Panopto may need to be updated.
This option allows instructors to embed videos in Moodle courses. Students have options to view the recording within or outside of Moodle.
Adding a Panopto recording using Panopto Embed
- In the Moodle space, turn editing on.
- In one of the sections on the main course page, click the link for "Add an activity or resource."
- Create the activity or resource that will include the embedded video.
- In the field where the embedded video is desired to be placed (such as a Label’s content or an Assignment’s description), click the "Panopto" icon in the HTML editor.
- Select the video and click Insert.
- Click the "Save and return to course" button to save the change.
Diagram of Sharing Options
This diagram provides an overview of different sharing options.
Videos can be shared with an individual or to a wider audience, such as a group, or all of NC State University, or outside of NC State University. Sharing a recording with an individual, a group, or NC State University, requires a Unity ID login to access the video, which allows one to track users’ viewing history. If recordings are shared outside of NC State University, a Unity ID login is not required to view the recordings; however, one will not be able to track individual viewing history.
