This document is intended to guide end users through the process of using Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to remotely control another Windows device when the user has the proper access to that device.

Information
When using computers remotely, it is necessary to VPN to campus in order to access certain campus resources. The Cisco VPN is a software package that allows a secure, authenticated connection to the University network in order to gain access to campus resources. Once a VPN connection is made, the computer is able to communicate with campus Domain Controllers for authentication, Remote Desktop (RDP) to other computers, and access campus provided network shares.
Prerequisites
- Be located ON campus OR if located OFF campus, then the computer will need to have the Cisco VPN client software installed.
- A Unity ID that has previously been allowed access to the Campus VPN (Visit vpn.ncsu.edu to setup VPN access).
- The Hostname/Computer Name or IP Address of the computer you wish to connect to.
- Device access. Commonly this is provided when the device is part of your specific department. If you find that you do not have access to a specific device, please contact the NCSU Help desk.
Quick Procedure Walk Through
- If the Cisco VPN software package is installed, run the application from Start -> Cisco -> Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
- All Faculty, Staff, and Students are required to enroll in Duo 2 factor to authenticate with the NC State VPN service. If you are not already enrolled in Duo you will need to do so before you can authenticate with the NC State VPN.
Authenticate to the NC State VPN with Duo
- In the AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, type vpn.ncsu.edu and select Connect.
- From the group drop down menu, select the appropriate VPN group for your needs or affiliation at NC State.
- Enter your UnityID and password.
- In the Second Password field:
- Type push to receive a Duo Push to accept.
- Users who only use a Security Key or U2F Token, can get a single use code at go.ncsu.edu/dc
- Enter your passcode received in your sms, the Duo App, OTP Tool,or provided by the NC State Help Desk.
- Select OK.
Start a Remote Desktop Connection
- Accessible through Start -> Windows Accessories -> Remote Desktop Connection
- Enter the Hostname or IP Address of the computer that you wish to connect to:
- The Hostname can be found by going to Start -> Settings -> System -> About. The Hostname is listed next to Device Name, example OITMD-123456
- The IP Address can be found by going to Start -> Settings -> Network & Internet -> Change Connection Properties. The IP Address is listed next to IPv4 Address.
- Click Connect and Login with your Wolftech (Unity ID) credentials, specifying the domain first (wolftech\<unityID>).
- You are now connected to the computer through Remote Desktop.
