Instructors can export gradebooks at any point in time during their course offering to several file formats. Exporting grades creates a file with information from the gradebook at that moment in time. This file can include grade data for any or all of the grade items in a gradebook, and also includes some identifying information about the users in the space.
This article provides instructions on exporting grade data from the Moodle Gradebook.
Data Included in Export
The data included in the gradebook export can contain any amount of information, at the instructor's discretion.
The following columns are added to the spreadsheet by default:
- First name, middle name, and last name
- The full name of the user.
- ID number
- The Unity ID and ID number of the student.
- Institution & Department
- These are both included as columns, but do not have any data included.
- Email address
- The email address of the user.
- Last downloaded from this course
- A specific course ID number that is unique to that course offering.
Grade item scores will be shown between the "Email address" and "Last downloaded..." columns.

File Types Available
Grade data can be downloaded in the following spreadsheet formats:
- Excel spreadsheet (XLSX)
- OpenDocument spreadsheet (ODS)
- Plain text file (CSV)
- XML file (XML)
The most readable version of this is the Excel spreadsheet option.
Export Format Options
When exporting data from the gradebook, the following options can be modified to change what information is in the spreadsheet.
- Include feedback in export
- This option determines whether any feedback provided to the grade item will be included in the export.
- Require active enrollment
- If checked, only actively enrolled users will be included in the spreadsheet.
- If there is important grade data from a student who has dropped the class, make sure to uncheck this option.
- Include all course users in export
- This includes every user regardless or role or active status.
- Grade export display types
- If any or all of these options are checked, a column will be made for each grade display type with the grade item's score.
- Grade export decimal places
- Determines how many decimal places are going to be included in a grade item's score.
The default settings will suffice for the majority of users.
