There are a few ways that Panopto recordings can be shared in a Moodle course. They can be shared using a URL resource, or as an activity type in the course that links directly to the Panopto recording.
This article provides an overview of the options instructors can use to add Panopto content, and instructions for implementing each option.
Adding Panopto Videos in Moodle
Any video from Panopto that the user has "Creator" access to can be added using one of these options.
There are three primary ways to add videos from Panopto to Moodle:
- Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle
- Using the URL Resource in Moodle to add a video by URL
- Using the Panopto embed option in the text editor
Each option has its own advantages or disadvantages.
Using the Panopto Activity in Moodle
The Panopto Activity in Moodle has the following advantages:
- Creates a column in the gradebook that provides a score for Panopto quiz results, or a score based on a watch percentage of the video.
- Restricts access to users who have access (past or present) to a particular Moodle space.
However, Panopto Activity links will need to be re-linked or re-created when they are copied between academic years.
To use the Panopto activity, see the "Adding a Panopto Activity in Moodle" article.
Using the URL Resource in Moodle
Adding a URL for a Panopto video provides a direct link to that content from a Moodle course. There are several considerations to keep in mind:
- URL resources do not need to be re-linked when it is copied between academic years.
- URL resources cannot be graded, and viewer analytics may be limited.
- Viewer permissions are controlled through Panopto sharing settings. To share a Panopto recording with the appropriate users, see the "Sharing Panopto Videos and Folders" article.
To link a Panopto recording, copy the "Share URL" for the video, then create a link to it using the instructions in the "Using Links in Moodle" article.
Embedding Panopto Videos into Text Content
Panopto videos can be embedded directly into the text fields for resources in Moodle. There are several considerations to keep in mind:
- Embedded Panopto videos do not need to be re-linked or re-created when copied between academic years.
- Embedded Panopto videos cannot be graded, and viewer analytics may be limited.
- Embedded video content does not currently function on the Moodle mobile app.
To embed a Panopto video, see the instructions in the "Embedding Video Content in a Moodle Course" article.
