The academic Moodle server, called "Moodle Courses", is provided for official Registration & Records courses. However, Moodle can also be used for other purposes, such as committee work, student groups, development of future courses, or research projects.
Such uses are supported on a Moodle server designated for such projects, called "Moodle Projects" spaces. All NC State faculty and staff have permission to activate them within a WolfWare space.
This article provides guidance on creating a Moodle Projects space.
Using Moodle (or Other WolfWare Tools) For Purposes Other Than Courses
Moodle is one of the course tools available through WolfWare, so to activate a Moodle Projects space, users must:
- Request the WolfWare Projects space.
- Activate Moodle, and any other tools, in that Projects space.
Before creating a Projects Space, faculty or staff must acknowledge that they have read and understood the WolfWare Project Spaces SOP.
Request the WolfWare Space
To request a WolfWare space, follow the steps below.
- Log into WolfWare with a Unity ID.
- At the top of the "My WolfWare" page, select the "Projects" tab.
- Click the "Request Project Space" button to access the request form.
- Complete the request form.
- Click the "Request Project Space" button.
The space has now been created, and Moodle can be activated.
Activate Moodle
To activate the Moodle course for the new project space:
- In the "Inactive" section of the Course Management page, click "activate" next to Moodle.
- Configure any desired settings for the project space.
- Click the "Create My Moodle Space" button at the bottom.
Moodle Project Space Settings
Some pertinent settings are:
- Shortname
- Provides users with a succinct label for the Moodle course. This is typically a shortened version of the full title that Moodle uses for breadcrumbs and other navigation.
- Availability window
- If desired, allows user to set a start and end date for when students (users who have the Student role within the space) should have access to the Moodle space. Set no date here for continuous access.
- Moodle Course Copier
- Allows the user to copy the content from another Moodle space. Only course content without student data will be copied over. Users can also start with a blank Moodle space (select "Create Blank Course") or a pre-structured Moodle course (select the Quick Start Course Shell).
After submitting the form, the Projects Space will typically be created in one hour or less. Using the Course Copier may increase the time required, depending on the size of the course being copied, and how many courses are currently also being copied by other instructors.
