If your personal device has BitLocker enabled it is possible the BitLocker recovery key got stored in your NC State Office 365 account.  It is a good idea to make a backup of this information for your own records as you do lose access to your NC State Office 365 account if you separate from the university and are no longer a student or employee.  If you do not see any devices listed or the devices listed do not offer the option to View BitLocker Keys, then your key is not stored with NC State or you do not have BitLocker enabled for that device.

Learn more about device encryption in windows or see other options for where else you might find your BitLocker recovery keys.

Get Your BitLocker Recovery Key

  1. Visit https://myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with your NC State Credentials
  2. Click Devices.
    Office365 Device Listing

  3. Click on the down arrow to expand the device info.
  4. Click View Bitlocker Keys.
    Office365 Device Info

  5. Click Show Recovery Key.
    BitLocker Keys for Device

  6. Click the Copy to clipboard icon to the right of the Recovery key.
    BitLocker Recovery Key Window

You will want to save both the KeyID (Step 5) and the Recovery Key (Step 6) somewhere other than on the device that BitLocker is enabled on.  It is also a good idea to label the keys with the device name, especially if you have multiple systems.  You can print this information out, save it to the cloud (not in your NC State Accounts), or on another system or device in the event you ever need the recovery key to regain access to your system or data.
