Panopto is the lecture capture service ClassTech uses in all 110 classrooms. The microphones, room camera, and displayed content are all captured by a recorder in the lectern, and the recording is then made available on the cloud for instructors and students to access.

This article will cover everything needed for a successful Panopto recording.

What does Panopto capture?

Panopto captures two video signals: one from the room camera, and one for content, which is whichever source option is selected on the touch panel. This means in most 110 classrooms the content video will show either the Lectern PC, the Document Camera, or whatever is connected to the Cable Cubby.

On the left you can see the Camera, set to the wide view. On the right, the Content shows the active source (the PC).

Panopto also captures microphone audio using any mic in the room.

What do I need to start a recording?

The recording can be ad-hoc or scheduled.  To learn how to start an ad-hoc recording using Panopto RecordNow, click here. Recordings can be scheduled through DELTA.

The A/V system in the room will need to be turned on and this can easily be accomplished with the touch panel.

The presentation should be prepared before the beginning of the lecture, to avoid any sensitive information being captured.

A microphone is needed (find them using this guide) to record speech.  The desk mic or wireless mic are both good options.

Finally, locate the touch panel for controlling the recording.

What can I control during a recording?

When the recording begins, the touch panel will chime "Recording has begun," and will show the recording controls screen.

You can continue to use the room's other controls while recording is active.

There is a pause button for pausing the recording, which changes to a play button when paused.  Note that the timer for the recording schedule will continue to run while the recording is paused.

There is a stop button for ending the recording early.

There are three buttons for changing the camera view, which you can read about here.

There are two previews for the two video signals, and also a panel to see audio levels during the recording.

There is always a Display Blank button which will prevent both the recording and the displays in the room from seeing anything from the content video signal.

What happens after the recording?

When the recording is complete, the touch panel will chime "Recording is complete", and will remove the recording controls from the screen.  After this, you are no longer being recorded.

The recording will be processed by Panopto and uploaded to the relevant folder, which you can read about here.
