If you don’t have a smartphone or you’re unable to use the Duo Mobile app as your Duo multifactor authentication method, you will need a security key.
A security key is a physical device that looks like a flash drive and plugs into your phone, computer, or tablet. You can use a security key to verify your identity when logging in to NC State services such as Google Workspace, MyPack Portal, and WolfWare.
A single security key can be used for multiple accounts, such as Duo for your Unity account and Google 2-Step Verification for generic accounts. Security keys should not be shared. You can add multiple security keys to the same account.
Students can purchase a security key in person from one of the following campus locations:
Security keys can also be purchased from non-university affiliated retailers. One option is the Security Key NFC by Yubico.
Employees should contact their supervisor or local IT for guidance on purchasing a security key.
While security keys can be purchased via the Wolfpack Outfitters Bookstore, the process for providing them to employees varies by department and college. Contact your local IT for questions.
For more information about how to set up and use a security key with Duo, see:
For general questions related to security keys, you can contact the NC State Help Desk via the NC State IT Service Portal or call 919-515-4357 (HELP).
