How to Generate an App Password

If you are enrolled in 2-step verification at NC State, some third-party applications and configurations will not accept your normal password.  In order to sign in to these applications, you will need to generate an "App Password" from your NC State Google Account.

App Passwords can only be used with accounts that have 2-Step Verification turned on.

App Password Generation Instructions

  1. Navigate to your Google Account Security Page
  2. In the "How you sign in to Google" section of the page, choose 2-Step Verification.
  3. Sign in using your NC State Password if required.
  4. Complete a 2-Step Verification if required.
  5. Scroll down until you see the App passwords section and click >.
  6. Choose Select app and choose the app you're using.
  7. Choose Select device and choose the device you're using.
  8. Click Generate.
  9. The App Password is the 16-character code in the yellow bar on your device.

Once you generate the App password, it will only be shown to you once, so keep the window containing it active until you finish logging into the third-party software. When you enter the App Password, do not include any spaces or hyphens.

To help protect your account, Google will revoke your App Passwords when you change your Google Account password.
