Standard Change Templates

In an effort to capture as many changes to the university environment as possible, using standard change templates will help keep track of all routine changes done on a day to day basis.

Standard changes, as defined by ITIL, are “a pre-authorized change that is low risk, relatively common and follows a procedure or work instruction” and the outcomes are well known and predictable.

Changes that follow a routine set of steps/instructions can be recorded and pre-approved in the ServiceNow change management module.

Before a template becomes available for use, a change authority must review the template and approve its use before it can become active and available.

Standard changes using templates do not need an approval before executing.

By definition, standard changes should be repeatable, occur frequently, and are proven to be low risk.   See KB article Standard Change.

Create a Proposal for a Standard Change Template

  1. Create and complete the proposal for a standard change template.
  2. Submit the proposal for approval.
  3. Once approved, the proposal becomes a standard change template.

These changes are routine and may be done frequently or periodically to maintain the infrastructure.

Standard changes are well documented and it enables IT staff to implement frequent changes quickly while managing risk.
