NCSU BitLocker recovery for a personal device


If your personal device has BitLocker enabled, it is possible that the BitLocker recovery key got stored in your NC State Microsoft account. For university-owned devices, you can go through BitLocker recovery for a university-owned device

Get your BitLocker recovery key

  1. Go to the My Account settings page and sign into your NCSU account.
  2. Select the Devices tab.
  3. Select View BitLocker Keys next to your device. 
  4. Select Show Recovery Key. Make sure to copy the Key ID.
    • Note: If there is not a BitLocker key for your device, it will instead display "No BitLocker recovery found for this device." Since NCSU does not manage your device, we will not have a BitLocker key elsewhere.
  5. Select the Copy icon next to the recovery key. Select Close.
  6. Save the Key ID and the recovery key somewhere other than your device that BitLocker is enabled on.
    • For example, you can print out the information and store it in a secure location, save it to the cloud on a personal account, or save it on another secure personal device.

It is strongly recommended to NOT attach your NCSU Microsoft account to your computer. If you have attached your NCSU Microsoft account to your computer. it is strongly recommended that you remove your NCSU account as a work or school account on your computer

Please note that you will not have access to your NCSU Microsoft account after separating from the university, and any information stored there should be backed up before you separate.
