An NC State email alias provides an easy-to-remember alternative email address that points to your NC State Gmail address.
Individual aliases can be requested for NC State faculty, staff, and a few other job classifications. Departmental aliases can be requested for existing Google generic accounts.
Individual Alias (For Faculty and Staff)
NC State faculty and staff can request individual email aliases. Your alias is only valid while your NC State Google account is active and you are eligible for an email alias.
Eligibility
- NC State faculty, staff, and a few other job classifications are eligible.
- Aliases are not available to undergraduate or graduate students.
- Your primary role must be faculty or staff.
- Certain job classifications are not eligible, including graduate students and no-pay employees.
- Note: Existing alias for graduate students (created before August 1, 2018) will continue to work until the student graduates. OIT recommends that graduate students not provide their alias to correspondents that they wish to retain after graduating.
Alias Requirements
- Cannot conflict with any existing alias
- Must be 9 characters or more in length
- Must be related to your name in some way
- Must be submitted by the individual wanting the alias
Alias Format
- Preferred alias format:
- firstname_lastname@ncsu.edu
- Alternative formats:
- firstname_m_lastname@ncsu.edu
- f_lastname@ncsu.edu
- nickname_lastname@ncsu.edu
- lastname@ncsu.edu (Length requirements must still be met.)
- Other alias formats will be considered.
Alias Request Process
Eligible NCSU employees can request an individual alias by submitting the Email Alias Request Form.
- Alias creation is not automated, so expect your alias to be available within seven business days of your request, frequently much faster.
- Additional delays may occur if your alias is already in use or does not meet all the alias requirements.
Departmental Alias (For Campus Units)
Departmental aliases should point to an existing Google generic account that is owned by a department, club, or other NCSU entity.
Alias Requirements
- Cannot conflict with any existing alias
- Must be 9 characters or more in length
- Must be tied to a valid organization, office, club, or other entity at NCSU
- Should always attempt to improve the identity of a given account
- Simple cosmetic changes (e.g., switching dashes to underscores or vice versa) of aliases are discouraged.
- Must point to a Google generic account
- The alias cannot point to any external email address.
- OIT will not create new departmental aliases that point to individual accounts, but OIT will continue to maintain support for existing departmental aliases that target individual Unity IDs.
Alias Request Process
Service contacts (as listed in Web Registry) of the generic account can request a departmental alias by submitting a request in the IT Service Portal. They can also request that it be retired at any time.
- Be sure to include the generic account email address and the desired alias in the email request.
- Alias creation is not automated, so expect the alias to be available within seven business days of your request, frequently much faster.
- Additional delays may occur if the alias is already in use or does not meet all the alias requirements.
Alias Retirement
Email aliases are only valid as long as the target NC State Gmail account is active. You can request to retire your alias at any time by submitting a request in the IT Service Portal.
- Individual email aliases will no longer be valid after the employee leaves the university or if they are no longer eligible for an alias.
- After an alias becomes invalid or is retired, messages sent to the alias will bounce back to the sender with a message saying the email address does not exist.
