NC State uses Managed Apple accounts for access to Apple Services including Apple Store apps and Apple Apps that use In-App Purchase for subscription licenses.
The Managed Apple Accounts are different from Consumer Apple Accounts in that they are limited to certain services allowed by Apple which DO NOT include installing software from the App Store or using In-App purchase.

Instead of the App Store, software should be provided with device based licenses by using the Apple Volume Purchase Program (VPP) available in the Apple School Manager (ASM) portal at school.apple.com and delivered to devices enrolled in the NC State approved configuration management system Jamf Pro. All university purchased devices must meet the Endpoint Protection Standard(EPS) and be enrolled in the approved configuration management system.
Some applications available via VPP still allow use of In-App Purchase which does not work with Managed Apple Accounts. If these apps are required for business or instructional purposes, the vendor of the software will have to provide either 1) a license which can be applied using a Configuration Profile (macOS) or App Configuration XML code(iPhone/iPad) in Jamf Pro or 2) a Pre-Licensed, custom version of the App made available in ASM specifically for the NC State University purchaser.
If the software vendor makes a license available as App Configuration XML code or Configuration Profile:
For iPads/iPhones
The Jamf Pro Site administrator can add this license code to the Mobile App under the App Configuration tab by pasting the code into the Preference Box at Mobile Devices>Mobile Device Apps>[App Name]>App Configuration.
For macOS
The Jamf Pro Site administrator can add this license code to the Mac App by deploying the custom configuration profile provided by the vendor of the software.
If the software vendor provides a custom version of the App in ASM:
For all Apple devices (including iPhone, iPad, macOS devices)
The Custom App will appear under the Custom Apps tab in ASM and can be assigned like any other VPP App by the Jamf Site administrator.
NOTE: It is uncommon for macOS apps to require In-App Purchase and many that do will have versions downloadable from the vendor's web site which do not have the In-App Purchase subscription or license.
if you are a Jamf Site Administrator and you do not already have the "Content Manager" role in ASM please open a help call making that request in the OIT_JAMF group.
