Beginning October 1, 2026, the Unified Communications team will implement an enhanced security policy requiring all voicemail PINs to be changed every 180 days. While PIN expiration has already applied to many users who access voicemail by phone, this expanded policy will apply to all voicemail mailboxes, including those primarily accessed through Cisco Jabber, Web Inbox, or Voicemail to Email.
Users will receive several reminders as their PIN expiration date approaches. Approximately two weeks before expiration, an email notification will be sent requesting that the voicemail PIN be changed at the user’s earliest convenience. About one week before expiration, users who have not yet updated their PIN will receive an automated voicemail reminder. A final email notification will be sent a few days before the PIN expires.
If the PIN is not changed before the expiration date, the existing PIN will be replaced with a randomly generated 24-digit PIN. Users will then need to visit voicemail.ncsu.edu and create a new PIN before they can access voicemail through the telephone interface. The same process applies if users forget their PIN. They can visit voicemail.ncsu.edu and create a new PIN.
An expired PIN will not prevent the mailbox from receiving new voicemail messages. Users will also continue to have access to their messages through Cisco Jabber, Web Inbox, and Voicemail to Email. The PIN change is required only to restore voicemail access by phone.
To avoid any interruption when accessing voicemail by phone, we strongly encourage users to update their PIN when they receive the initial notification. For questions or assistance, please contact the NC State Helpdesk at 919.515.HELP(4357).
