How Can Someone Join A Google Group I Manage  KB0016547

To allow users to join your Google Group with little or no group manager intervention, you must first check and possibly change who can join your Google Group if required. You will also need to change your Group Visibility to "Anyone on the web" if you want to allow users with a Google account the ability to join from the web.

Join from the web

Joining from the web requires they have a Google account.

  1. Visit https://groups.google.com/a/ncsu.edu/g/NAMEOFGROUP.
    • Replace NAMEOFGROUP with the unqualified name of your group.
    • If your group email address is group-booturkey@ncsu.edu, then group-booturkey is the group name.
  2. Enter or edit your Display Name if required and set your subscription preference.
  3. Click the "Join this group" button.

With the addition of Google Groups with a @lists.ncsu.edu email address, the subscribe link in Step #1 changes slightly.

  1. Visit https://groups.google.com/a/lists.ncsu.edu/g/NAMEOFGROUP.
    • Replace NAMEOFGROUP with the unqualified name of your group.
    • If your group email address is booturkey@lists.ncsu.edu, then booturkey is the group name.

Join by email

If you prefer to not have your group visibility set to "Anyone on the web", then you have can all future members subscribe by email.

  1. Compose an email to group-nameofgroup+subscribe@ncsu.edu or nameofgroup+subscribe@lists.ncsu.edu.
    • If your group email address is group-booturkey@ncsu.edu, then you compose the email to group-booturkey+subscribe@ncsu.edu.
    • If your group email address is booturkey@lists.ncsu.edu, then you compose the email to booturkey+subscribe@lists.ncsu.edu.
    • No subject or text in the body of the message is required.
  2. The member will receive a "Join request" email, and they only need to reply to the email.
    • When they reply, there is no need to change the subject or add any text to the body of the message.
