Getting a personal computer for college can take a lot of planning. The article below answers some common questions about making personal device purchases. Please note that the Office of Information Technology does not give any official recommendation for purchasing, so these should be treated as guidelines.
NOTE: This article is only referring to personally owned computers, primarily for students. If you are faculty or staff inquiring about purchasing a computer for your work, please contact your local IT.
What type of computer should I purchase?
They type of computer you buy largely depends on your major or college. Most colleges have their own minimum/recommended specifications for what computers you should buy. Below is a comprehensive list of the requirements for each school:
- College of Design
- College of Education
- College of Engineering
- College of Veterinary Medicine
- All other colleges and programs
Where should I purchase my computer from?
There is no requirement that computers be purchased from NC State directly. If you are buying a new device, it can come from Wolfpack Outfitters NC State Store, directly from manufacturers, or from third-party vendors (e.g. Best Buy). While no method is recommended over any other, Wolfpack Outfitters does guarantee that you will have a device that fits your department's requirements and can be fully assisted with our on-campus support. What software does NC State offer?
NC State provides a variety of free software to students, including Office 365. A full list of software licensed for University use can be found at the Software Site.

How do I get support for my computer?
Depending on the type of computer you have and its warranted, you may be entitled to support from our Walk-In Center.
