Information
Process
These instructions are for setting up a PC Stick for use with Billboard displays for the Managed Desktop Support group.
Note: There are various models of PC Sticks available, including Intel Compute Sticks, MeLe PC Sticks, and Terryza PC Sticks. We highly recommend that customers purchase a PC Stick with at least 128GB of storage, which provides enough space for software installations and future updates.
Bootable USB Flash Drive Creation for Windows Installation
- Download the Rufus bootable usb drive creation tool from this website: https://rufus.ie/
- Run the Rufus tool executable and click the Select button.
- Browse to the Windows 11 Education 64-bit Version ISO file or Windows 10 if it is not supported on that system to be installed.
- The ISO file can be downloaded from this location: \\wolftech.ad.ncsu.edu\OIT\Original_Media\Microsoft\Windows
- Click the Start button to create the bootable USB Flash drive.
Attach PC Stick Hardware
- Plug the Bootable USB Flash Drive into the PC Stick usb port.
- Plug the keyboard and mouse into the usb ports on the power adapter (usb hub).
- Connect the power cable to the PC Stick and power adapter.
- Plug the PC Stick into the HDMI port on the display.
- Connect the power adapter into the power outlet using the United States 2 prong power adapter plug.
- Adjust the display input setting for HDMI to display the PC Stick on the screen.
- If needed, install the security loop cable through the security loop hole on the end of the Intel Compute Stick for increased security.
Windows 10 or 11 Installation
- Power On the PC Stick by pressing the Power button.
- Press the appropriate key to boot to the Bootable Flash Drive. Note: Different PC Sticks use different methods so research the method specific to that PC Stick model.
- Intel Compute Stick Press F10 during startup.
- MeLe PC Stick Press F7 at startup.
- Terryza PC Stick Press Esc at starup.
- Select Next on the Language screen.
- Select Install Now.
- Select Windows 11 Education or Windows 10 Education if it is not supported on that system. Select Next.
- Accept the license terms check box (Press Alt+A if using keyboard only) and click Next.
- Select Custom: Install Windows Only (Advanced)
- Delete all partitions so there is only one partition. Click Next.
- Windows Files are now copied and installed for use.
- Configure correct Date and Time in the Control Panel and set Eastern Time Zone.
- Connect to Wireless for network connectivity.
PC Stick Hardware Driver Installation
Note: Different PC Stick models require different hardware drivers to be installed. Contact the model manufacturer for hardware drivers if needed. Below are some examples:
- Intel Compute Stick Hardware Drivers
- MeLe PC Stick Hardware Drivers
- Terryza PC Stick Hardware Drivers
- Download from the website or install from another Terryza system.
- \\wolftech.ad.ncsu.edu\oit\Shares\OITTSS\Common\Drivers\PC Sticks\Terryza PC Stick Drivers
Join to the Wolftech Active Directory Domain
- Open File Explorer
- Right click This PC and select Properties
- Select Change Settings next to Computer Name, click Change
- Type the computer name and domain (wolftech.ad.ncsu.edu)
- Prior to restarting the computer Open Active Directory Users and Computers and move the computer object into the correct OU.
- wolftech.ad.ncsu.edu/NCSU/OIT/OITMD/Clients/DEPTOU/Billboards/Desktops (Where DEPTOU is specific to that customer)
- If department Billboard OU does not exist then send a Servicenow request to OIT_DESKTOP_TECHNICAL to have one created.
- Add the PC Stick Wolftech AD Computer Object to these Wolftech AD Groups:
- OITMD-SC-Microsoft-SCCM-Set Cache 10GB
- OITMD-DN-Adobe-Acrobat Pro DC-2021.001.20135
- OITMD-DN-Adobe-Acrobat Pro DC-2019.021.20049
- OITMD-DN-Microsoft-Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise-AUTO
- OITMD-DN-Microsoft-Office Professional-2016
- OITMD-FW-Alertus-Alertus-AUTO
- OITMD-FW-Google-Chrome-AUTO
- Restart the computer.
- Open Windows Powershell or Command Prompt and type gpupdate /force
SCCM Client Installation
- Install the SCCM client per the instructions on the Active directory Config Manager Client webpage
Encryption with Microsoft Bitlocker
- Verify that the PC Stick supports Bitlocker with UEFI and TPM installed.
- Enable device encryption by adding the computer object in Active Directory Users and Computers into the group named: OITMD-SC-Microsoft-MBAM-Bitlocker Settings Normal
- Verify the device hard drive is encrypted by accessing Start, Control Panel, Bitlocker Drive Encryption, Bitlocker should be listed as On.
Billboard Networking Configuration
- Determine if device will be connected via direct ethernet or wireless - if through direct ethernet, a standard Infoblox IP registration will work, otherwise you will need a Statis Wireless IP Address for Billboard functionality which is configured by the Network Operations Center (NOC).
- Contact the Network Operations Center (NOC) by going to the Help Desk or 919-515-4657 to request a Static Wireless IP Address to be assigned to the wireless MAC address of the PC Stick wireless network card. Inform the NOC that this will be used for a Billboard Display and that it needs DHCP enabled.
- Once the Static Wireless IP Address has been assigned to the PC Stick then the Billboard Admin will need to configure that new Static Wireless IP Address in their Billboard Screens configuration for use.
- Eduroam does NOT work to provide Billboard functionality using a static wireless IP address. Make sure the eduroam software group is not added to Billboard devices.
Billboard Configurations
- The Billboard Admin assigned to that specific Billboard Display will need to assign the slides that will be presented for use on the screen from this website: https://billboard.ncsu.edu/
- Adjust the Billboard and PC Stick resolutions as needed to match the Display resolution to help with clarity and slide sizing. A good starting resolution is 1600x900 and can be adjusted as needed from there. Also, configure the PC Stick display to disable sleep settings so the Billboard always stays on and Automatically hide the Taskbar.
- If needed, Press Alt+F4 on your keyboard to exit the fullscreen Billboard Kiosk mode and access the Windows desktop.
Endpoint Protection Standard Exception Form Completion
Since Billboards do not meet the Authentication requirement of the Endpoint Protection Standard then the use of Billboard systems requires filling out the exception form for use.
- Customers must fill out the Endpoint Protection Standard Exception form at this website: https://oit.ncsu.edu/it-security/it-exception-request/
- The Security Control (Also known as Compensating Control or Alternate Solution) for the Billboards Authentication requirement is completed through the use of a restricted auto-logon service account.
- You can also provide this article to the customer to assist with Submitting EPS Exception for Billboards and Kiosks
Local Admin Account:
NOTE: If a Local Admin account has been created, make sure this is removed before deployment.
1. Right click the Start menu, and choose Computer Management.

2. Open the Computer Management console with your .admin credentials.
3. Choose Local Users and Groups->Groups->Administrators

4. Delete any local USER accounts from this folder such as a .ADMIN account or a user created account. This should only be populated with AD groups that will provide access from a hierarchical AD Permission.
Example after local accounts removed:
