For the Forum activity in Moodle, whole forum grading using any grading method does not supply feedback to the gradebook. To provide feedback, a reply can be made to a student's discussion post or reply that is only visible to that student.

This article provides instructions for replying privately to a student's Forum post.

Using Private Replies to Provide Feedback

Private replies are visible only to the recipient, and to any users with this role in the Moodle course:

• Grader
• Blind Quiz Grader
• Instructional Support
• Teaching Assistant
• Instructor

Private replies are a useful way to provide feedback to a Forum with whole forum grading enabled. To enable whole forum grading, see the "Grading Moodle Forums Using Whole Forum Grading" article.

To reply privately to a Forum:

1. Navigate to the Forum activity.
2. Find the post to reply to.
3. At the bottom-right corner of that post, click the Reply link.
4. Under the text field that appears, using the checkbox, enable the Reply privately field.
5. In the text field, type the reply.
6. Click the Post to forum button.

This will post a private reply to the Forum that can viewed by the student, but not by other students.
