FAQ: Windows 10 End of Support

Table of Contents

1. Why do I have to upgrade to Windows 11?

The Windows 10 operating system will reach the end of support on Oct. 14, 2025. End of support means Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support. Continuing to run Windows 10 puts NC State’s systems and data at risk.

2. What’s the deadline to upgrade to Windows 11?

NC State’s deadline is July 25, 2025.

3. How do I know my device’s operating system?

Run the Microsoft PC Health check app.

4. How do I see the status of my department or college’s devices?

Review the Device Tracking Report, which is updated regularly. Departmental administrators may also review the readiness report in the Configuration Manager console by navigating to “Software Library>Windows 11 Upgrade Readiness.”

5. What are the hardware requirements for running Windows 11?

Windows 11 has minimum processor, memory and storage requirements. Additionally, the system firmware must be UEFI, SecureBoot and TPM v2.0 capable. See the specific requirements.

6. Can I upgrade to Windows 11 now?

Yes. Departments and colleges can upgrade eligible devices now using Configuration Manager. OIT Managed Desktop has rolled out the upgrade for most users with an OIT-supported device. Self-service is available for any OIT-supported devices that have not yet been upgraded.

7. What if my device can’t be upgraded because it doesn’t meet the Windows 11 hardware requirements?

You must either replace your device or OIT will submit an IT exception request and purchase Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program for one year on your behalf. This only includes devices in the Device Tracking Report.

8. What if I choose not to upgrade my Windows 11-capable device?

If there are valid reasons why a device cannot be upgraded, local IT must submit an IT exception request by July 25. Local IT should submit one request and attach a spreadsheet of all affected devices. Once approved by the dean or department head, the request will be reviewed by OIT and OIT will purchase Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program for one year on your behalf. This only includes devices in the Device Tracking Report.

An example of a valid reason for not upgrading is the device uses critical software that is incompatible with Windows 11.

Any remaining devices without an approved IT exception will be force upgraded starting Aug. 1.

10. Are there reasons an IT exception might be denied?

IT exceptions may be denied if no acceptable compensating controls are indicated.

11. What is Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program?

Through the Extended Security Update program, enrolled devices can continue to receive monthly security updates for up to three years after the October deadline. The program is available for a yearly fee. OIT will only cover the cost for the first year.

12. How do I enroll in Microsoft’s Extended Security Update program?

After the university’s July 25 deadline, OIT will purchase Extended Security Update keys for one year for devices in the Device Tracking Report that are incompatible with Windows 11 and Windows 11-capable devices with an approved IT exception.

13. My department or college may need to replace a lot of devices. Is there a cheaper alternative?

OIT is working with Surplus to identify devices in the surplus inventory that are capable of running Windows 11. Any Windows 11-capable devices will be withheld from public sale for 30 days. See the inventory lists, which are updated every two weeks. Departments interested in purchasing equipment can contact Bill Carlson at wdcarlso@ncsu.edu.

14. Who do I contact for help?

Users should contact their local IT for questions or concerns related to upgrading to Windows 11 on university-owned devices. If you are unsure who to contact, reach out to the NC State Help Desk by emailing help@ncsu.edu, calling 515-4357 (HELP) or via the NC State IT Service Portal. IT staff who need assistance with upgrade issues, troubleshooting or other general questions related to the upgrade process should contact the Help Desk.
