Editing a Question in Moodle's Question Bank


Questions in Moodle can be edited to create new versions of the question or correct errors with the question. This can be valuable in regrading Quiz attempts or adjusting the format of question text or response types.

This article provides guidance on editing an existing question in Moodle.

Accessing a Question in Moodle

There are several methods for accessing a question in Moodle for editing. 

Accessing the question through the Question Bank

To access a question through the Question Bank:

  1. Follow the directions in the "Overview of the Question Bank in Moodle" article to access the Question Bank.
  2. Filter for the category that contains the question using the instructions in the "Filtering Questions in the Question Bank" article.
  3. In the table of questions, find the question to edit.
  4. In that row, in the Actions column, click the Edit link.
  5. In the drop-down menu that appears, select the Edit question option.

This will open the Editing question page, where the question's text and configuration can be changed.

Accessing a question through a Quiz's Questions page

To access a question through a Quiz's Questions page:

  1. Navigate to the Quiz that contains in the question to edit.
  2. In the Quiz menu at the top of the page, select the Questions tab.
  3. In the Questions page, find and click the question to edit.

This will open the Editing question page where the question's text and configuration can be changed..

Accessing a question during a Quiz preview or review

To access a question in a preview for a Quiz attempt:

  1. Start a preview attempt using the directions in the "Previewing a Moodle Quiz" article.
  2. Navigate through the Quiz attempt to the question to edit.
  3. To the left of the question's text and responses, click the Edit question link.

This will open the Editing question page where the question's text and configuration can be changed. Saving changes to the question will update the preview attempt automatically with the latest version of the question.

The same workflow can be followed when reviewing a student's attempt, but the question will not update unless a Quiz regrade is run using the instructions in the "Updating a Moodle Quiz After Student Attempts" article.
