Persistent chat rooms let you join ongoing discussions organized by topic. Messages remain available over time, so you can return later and review previous conversations. For example, you may create a public-themed chat room, such as "NC State IT Community.”
You can:
- Browse all rooms
- Create chat rooms
- Join existing rooms
- Search conversations
- Set up keyword notifications
- Mention users
- Share your screen
Create a Persistent Chat Room
- Click the Chat Rooms icon in the Jabber client.
- Select the All Rooms tab.
- Click New Room.
- Complete the room details on the New Room screen.
- Choose Room Type
- Public - Any Cisco Jabber user can join.
- Restricted - Only invited members can access the room.
- Check Add to My Rooms.
- (Optional) Add Moderators.
- Moderators can:
- Change the room subject
- Add or remove members
- Ban members
- (Optional) Click Password to set a room password.
- Members must enter the password each time they join.
- Click Create.
- You will be automatically placed in the chat room.
You can choose to add members immediately or later.
To Add Members
- Enter each member's name.
- Press Enter after each name.
- Click Save.
Note: If someone adds you to a chat room, it is displayed immediately in your My Rooms tab.
To Edit or Delete the Room
- Click the Edit Room icon in the upper right corner.
Join a Chat Room
- Click the Chat Room icon.
- Select the All Rooms tab.
- Browse rooms (listed alphabetically).
- Click Join next to the room.
Notes:
- Restricted rooms display a lock icon.
- You cannot join restricted rooms unless a moderator adds you.
- Rooms you already belong to display a checkmark.
- All joined rooms appear under My Rooms.
Participate in a Chat Room
- Click the Chat Rooms.
- Select My Rooms.
- Double-click the room you want to enter.
- Inside the room:
- The participant list appears on the right.
- You can show or hide the participant list.
- Type messages in the text field to contribute.
- Persistent History:
- Conversation history remains available.
- You can exit and return later.
- Messages sent while you were offline are visible when you return.
- Click Show More to view older messages.
Search Chat Rooms
You can search for messages by keyword, participant, room name, or date range.
Note: You must be a member of the room to search it.
- Click the Chat Rooms icon.
- Select the Filters tab.
- Enter search criteria in the search field.
- Double-click a result to open the matching room.
- Search Limitations:
- Searches only include messages from the time you joined the room.
- Special characters are not searchable unless combined with letters.
Create Chat Room Filters (Notifications)
Filters notify you when specific keywords or users appear in conversations.
You can create filters for:
- Your username (mentions)
- Specific keywords
- Specific users
- Click the Chat Rooms icon.
- Select Filters > Create Filter.
- Enter a title.
- Define filter criteria.
- You must:
- Specify at least one keyword OR
- Specify a sender username
- You may:
- Use up to three keywords
- Combine sender + keywords
- Click Create.
- When matches occur:
- A red notification appears in Jabber.
- The filter tab displays unread match counts.
- Click a match to open the related conversation.
Share your Desktop in a Persistent Chat
You can share your screen with room participants.
Requirements:
- The room must have at least one other member.
- An IM session must be active.
To share your screen:
- In the chat room, click the More (three dots) icon.
- Select Share Screen.
- If prompted, choose the screen to share.
- Click Share.
- Participants can:
- View your shared screen
- Request remote control
- Share their own screen
If someone requests remote control, you will receive a notification.
Mention Users in a Chat Room
Mentions notify users that they were referenced in a conversation.
To mention someone:
- In the chat message field, type @ followed by the person's username.
- Select the correct name from the directory list.
- Send your message.
After sending:
- The mentioned user receives a notification.
- The mention appears in their My Mentions filter.
- The notification links directly to the conversation.
Notes:
- Mentions generate notifications only if:
- The room is public, and the user is an NC State Jabber user, OR
- The user is a member of the room
- Press Esc to exit the mention field if needed.
