Changing Browser Security Settings on a Moodle Quiz

Instructors can increase the security of their Moodle Quizzes by enabling a browser security option that limits what a student is able to do in the Quiz.

This article provides instructions for enabling a limited browser security option in a Quiz.

Enhanced Browser Security in a Quiz

Enhanced browser security in a Moodle Quiz features the following:

Enhanced browser security does not prevent students from navigating outside of the Quiz or exiting the exam session.

This option is a less intrusive version of a program like Safe Exam Browser, as it does not download to a student's computer or require a second authentication after launching. For instructions on using Safe Exam Browser, see the "Enabling Secure Testing in a Moodle Quiz using Safe Exam Browser" article.

Changing Browser Security Options

To enable browser security in a Moodle Quiz:

  1. In the main Moodle course page, navigate to a given Quiz.
  2. In the Quiz menu at the top of the page, select the Settings tab.
  3. Find and expand the Extra restrictions on attempts section.
  4. Click the Show more... link in this section.
  5. Set the Browser security field to Full screen pop-up with some JavaScript security.
  6. At the bottom of the settings page, click the Save and display button.

Any attempts on the Quiz after this point will be in a full screen pop up window with limited security.  To test this, switch to a student role by following the instructions in the "Using Student View in Moodle" article, and submit a new attempt.
