Downloading Moodle Assignment Submissions

Instructors can download submission files for a Moodle assignment, for grading or other hard copy needs.

The instructions in this article walk through the process for accessing and downloading the submitted files to a Moodle Assignment, as well as the various settings that may be applied when downloading said files.

Downloading Moodle Assignment Submissions

There are three parts to obtaining the files that students submitted to a Moodle assignment:

  1. First, access the Moodle Assignment submissions page.
  2. Then, adjust the settings for and select the files to download.
  3. Finally, download the submission files.
Accessing Moodle Assignment Submissions

To access the relevant Assignment submissions:

  1. In the course main page, find the Assignment to download submissions from.
  2. Click the Assignment title to access the activity page.
  3. On the activity page, click the Submissions tab in the activity menu.

This will open the Submissions page for the Assignment.  In this page, settings for downloading files can be changed to the instructor's preference.

Adjusting download settings and selecting files

To adjust the settings for the file downloads:

  1. At the bottom of the window, set Show to All to view all students in one page.
  2. Above the table of submissions, click the Filter by name drop-down menu.
  3. Select All for First name and Last name to ensure all students in the course are shown.
  4. Click the Advanced drop-down menu.
  5. Uncheck Include suspended participants, unless a submission from a student who previously dropped the course is needed.
  6. Click the Apply button.
  7. Uncheck Download submissions in folders, so all files are downloaded into one ZIP file rather than creating individual subfolders.

Everything now is set so student submissions to the Assignment will be downloaded in one ZIP file.

At this point, select the submissions to download using the Select column on the leftmost side of the submissions table.  Check the box next to any student to select them individually, or click the box at the top of the column to select all the students.

Downloading submitted files

To download the submissions after adjusting the relevant settings:

  1. At the bottom of the window, click Download.
  2. In the Download selected submissions pop-up, click the Download button.

The files will download to the computer's default download folder.
