Is there a cost associated with using Cisco Jabber?

There is no charge for using Cisco Jabber.  It is included as part of your current telephone service fees.

What is the difference between Softphone mode and Deskphone mode?

Softphone mode lets you place and receive voice and video calls directly from your computer or mobile device without a physical desk phone. This feature is available on Windows, macOS, and supported mobile devices.

Deskphone mode allows you to control your physical desk phone from the Jabber client. When using Click to Dial, your desk phone will ring, and you must pick up the handset to begin the call.

Note: To request softphone capability, select Jabber Chat Services and/or Jabber Softphone on the Self-Service portal.

How do I get Cisco Jabber?

Enable Cisco Jabber through the Self-Service portal. Once enabled, download and install the client on your device.

How do I install the Cisco Jabber client?

Cisco Jabber is available for Windows and macOS.

  1. Enable the service (see above).
  2. Download the client.
  3. Follow the installation instructions provided in the ComTech Cisco Jabber article.

Note: If you use a managed desktop, contact your LAN technician to add your computer to the appropriate Active Directory (AD) group for Cisco Jabber.

Can I install the Cisco Jabber client on my mobile device?

Yes. Cisco Jabber is available for most major mobile platforms. After enabling the service, download the Cisco Jabber app from your device's app store.

Please note that third-party clients provide only basic instant messaging functionality. Advanced Cisco Jabber features are not supported.

Can I use Cisco Jabber off campus?

Yes. Cisco Jabber can be used from any location without a VPN.

Note: A VPN may still be required to access other campus systems. If needed, connect to the internet, then log in with your UnityID and password. VPN information and instructions

Can I change my availability status manually?

Yes. Use the drop-down menu under your name in the Jabber window to select:

Can I forward voicemail messages in Cisco Jabber?

Yes. Right-click the voicemail message within the Jabber client and select Forward voice message.

Can I create chat rooms for my department or group?

Yes.

To create a group conversation: 

  1. Click the Add Participant icon in the chat window.
  2. Search for and select the contact. 
  3. Click Add.

Group chat is available only for use on the Cisco Jabber service.

Persistent chat rooms can be created using the Rooms icon in the Jabber client.
