How to map a network drive on a Mac

If you have lost access to one of your network drive spaces, including your departmental share drive (S:) or your NCSU home (B:) drive, or if you're looking to map these drives for the first time, follow the instructions below.

These instructions are for Mac users only.  Please see these instructions if you need to map a network drive on Windows.

1. Connect to the VPN

To map to a network drive, you must first connect to the NC State VPN.

2. Determine a drive path

The drive path is the address of the directory to which you are attempting to connect.  You will need this drive path in Step 5 of the next section.

For a Personal Drive: You will use smb://ncsudrive.ncsu.edu/home

For a Departmental Share Drive: You will use smb://ncsudrive.ncsu.edu/oitmd/clients/DEPTSHARE, where DEPTSHARE is replaced with the name of your share.  Your share name must be capitalized! Please see this list for help determining your department's share name.

3. Connect to the network drive

  1. Open the Finder application
  2. From the menu bar, select Go
  3. Choose Connect to Server
  4. If you have already saved the path to the desired NCSU Drive space, select that path from the Favorite Server list and skip to Step 7. Otherwise, continue to Step 5.
  5. In the Server Address box, type the drive path you determined in the previous section.
    • If you connect to a departmental share drive, your share name must be capitalized!
  6. Select the plus sign (+) to save this drive in the Favorite Server panel (for convenience).
  7. Select Connect
  8. If prompted, log in using wolftech/yourUnityID (where yourUnityID is replaced with your Unity ID) as the username and your Unity password as the password.
  9. A window will open showing that you are connected to a drive labeled with either “home” or the name of your department shared drive.
