VPN installer can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software


If you try to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client in macOS and see the message that the file can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software and the software needs to be updated, you will need to confirm your intent to open or install the app.

View the app security settings on your Mac

macOS 12 or earlier

  1. In System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click General.
  2. Click Open Anyway.



  3. Enter your administrative password if prompted.

macOS 13 or later

  1. In System Settings, click Privacy & Security in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down).
  2. Go to Security, then click Open.
  3. Click Open Anyway.
    • This button is available for about an hour after you try to open the app.
  4. Enter your administrative password if prompted.
