Internet Access in Residence Halls

Campus Networks

Most residence halls at NC State are equipped with an access point that allows students to connect their devices to wired and wireless networks. NC State has three main networks, described below, that students can use for different types of devices. Note that different types of devices may need to be connected to different types of networks.

Wireless Internet Access

For Phones, Computers, and Tablets

Devices with web browsers such as phones, computers, and tablets should be enrolled in eduroam by using the Connect to the eduroam Wireless Network instructions. Note that the process is different for different types of devices.

Note: Eduroam requires active internet access to start enrollment. You do not have to be on campus to enroll your device and you can use the wireless hotspot on your phone for connection if necessary. If no other network is available, then you can log into the ncsu wireless network on campus so you can enroll your device in eduroam.

For Other Devices (e.g., Video Game Consoles and Smart TVs)

Devices without web browsers, such as video game consoles and smart TVs, can connect to the ncsu wireless network by following the Connect Your Device to the ncsu Wireless Network instructions. Please note that you must enroll your device in Nomad first.

For Casting Devices and Connected Smart Devices

Campus networks are not designed to support casting devices or other devices that require two devices (e.g., your phone and the smart device) to be on the same network. These devices can sometimes still work if you request a public IP address and use the public address, but please note that using a public IP address will make your device visible to devices on other networks, which allows external devices to establish direct connections to your device. OIT cannot guarantee that these devices will work as intended.

Wired Internet Access

General Wired Access

You can follow the Use Wired Network Connections in Residence Halls instructions to connect via ethernet in your residence hall. Please note that you must enroll your device in Nomad first. After enrolling your device's wired MAC address in Nomad and waiting for the device registration to process, you can use an ethernet cable to connect your device to the network using the access point in your room or relevant ethernet wall port in campus apartments.

Wired Access in Campus Apartments

In campus apartments (e.g., Wolf Ridge, Wolf Village, Greek Village, and ES King Village), there is typically an access point in the living room and an ethernet wall port in each bedroom. Make sure that you use the correct ethernet port for your apartment. You are still required to enroll your device in Nomad before using the wall ports.

Wired TV Access

Coaxial cable connections are disabled in all dorms. Some dorm rooms may still have coaxial cable outlets and wires in the room, but they are not functional. You can find more information in Access to WolfTV and Stream2.

Disallowed Devices on NC State Networks

Some devices may inhibit others from access NC State networks due to interference and are not allowed to connect to the campus network. The Network Operations Center may remove any device that interferes with the campus networks, including the devices below.
