Most users running Linux have better success connecting with the NC State VPN utilizing the OpenConnect client instead of the client packages provided by Cisco. Below are the instructions last tested for Ubuntu 22.04 running Gnome. You will need to adjust the package manager commands or appropriate GUI for your Linux distro and preferences. OIT does not provide advanced troubleshooting for Linux and every Linux distro out there.
Install OpenConnect Client
- Open a Terminal window.
- Enter the command:
sudo apt-get -y install openconnect network-manager-openconnect network-manager-openconnect-gnome
- Enter your administrator password when prompted.
- Wait for the packages to finish installing.
Set Up the NC State VPN Connection
- Select the Network icon in the upper-right.
- Open the Network Settings.
- Select the + icon next to the VPN Heading.
- Select Multi-Protocol VPN Client.
- Name: NC State VPN (or any other meaningful name)
- VPN Protocol: Cisco AnyConnect or openconnect
- Gateway: vpn.ncsu.edu
- All other settings can be left as provided.
- Select Add in the top right.
Connect to the NC State VPN
- From the Network Icon in the upper-right, select VPN OFF.
- Select Connect.
- Choose the appropriate VPN Group.
- Enter your Unity ID as the username.
- Enter your Unity ID password in the first Password field.
- In the Second Password field, use one of the methods below to sign in with Duo.
