Hosted Services and Applications

OIT Hosted Services provides support and services to NCSU departments and colleges for managing their servers, and related services, while hosting them in a stable and secure IT environment.  These environments include on site data centers, as well as various cloud providers such as Amazon and Microsoft.

To report an incident, problem, or an outage, please call 919-515-HELP (4357) during normal business hours (M-F, 8-5), or 919-515-5500 after regular business hours or on weekends or holidays.

We work with many NCSU OIT infrastructure groups to determine hosting options based upon availability requirements (uptime, etc.), integration/middleware requirements, security requirements, disaster recovery, etc.

Available services and features:

  • 24×7 on-call support
  • Technical assistance with planning, server configuration, and implementations
  • System monitoring, management, and administration
  • Server software patching and updates
  • Data backup and restore services
  • Technical consultation, including with application vendors
  • System and network security, such as antivirus, firewall protection, and data protection
  • Middleware support and integration, such as web servers, database servers, server certs, authentication requirements, etc.
  • Physical security within locked, climate-controlled and monitored data centers
  • Electrical power protected by an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and backup generators for on-premises hosted solutions
  • Disaster recovery
  • Special projects

This service is available to the entire campus community.  During the initial consultancy and requirements gathering phase, it may be determined that another service offered within OIT may be better suited.  If that is the case, Hosted Services will help with the engagement, and transition to the other service offering provider.

Costs are broken down by compute resources and services (including applications), and can vary depending upon requirements.

Computing resources that influence costs include:

  • OS (operating system) license requirements (Windows license is already included)
  • Number of CPU's (processors) required
  • Amount of RAM (memory) required
  • Amount and type of storage required
  • Hosting location (on-premises or cloud)
  • Type of server (physical or virtual)

Services that influence costs include:

  • Normal support requirements
  • Software/Application license(s)
  • Additional support needs (special application needs and assistance, special projects, or application support)
  • Integration and/or middleware requirements, such as Shibboleth integration, web services, and/or database services
  • Security and Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC)
