AWS Cloud Services

Amazon Web Services provides a highly reliable, scalable, low-cost infrastructure platform in the cloud that powers hundreds of thousands of businesses in hundreds of countries around the world.  Read more about Amazon Web Services.

AWS Cloud Credits for Research supports researchers who seek to build cloud-hosted science-as-a-service applications, software, or tools to facilitate their research, proof of concept or benchmark tests evaluating the efficacy of moving research workloads to the cloud.

Cloud services can be requested through the Cloud Service Request Form. Cloud requests usually are about consultation for a project or to onboard some project onto the cloud (or both)

AWS CloudFront

AWS CloudFront is used to providing caching proxy services as well as an edge-distribution service for the main www.ncsu.edunews.ncsu.eduemergency.ncsu.edu, and cdn.ncsu.edu websites, providing resiliency and speed improvements for international site visitors.

AWS Control Tower

NCSU uses the AWS Control Tower to centrally manage brokered AWS accounts. OIT manages the Control Tower organization to improve AWS tenant security, goals including:

  • Decreasing overall costs as academic discounts are deployed for all organizational tenants and bulk discounts are calculated for the entire organization instead of per tenant.
  • Simplifying identity management by having a single location to deploy Shibboleth SSO and manage permissions within the organization.
  • Integration with the Splunk Log Analysis platform for log monitoring and alerting.
  • Provide a single interface for the inclusion of Security and Compliance oversight into campus AWS tenants.

AWS has a number of services that are available for Free.

OIT Managed AWS Accounts will require a NCSU Project ID for provisioning, OIT will centrally manage the billing and accounting and charge back through the departmental Project ID.

A starting estimate for costs can be calculated using the AWS Price Calculator.
