The Secure University Research Environment (SURE) was developed as NC State’s solution to safeguard Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and similarly controlled data, applications and research to standards required by the Federal Government, specifically the NIST SP 800-171 standard. These requirements are typically listed in the applicable research contract. SURE is a secure enclave providing compute, storage and networking services for contracts, grants and awards requiring compliance.   The service is jointly owned by the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) and the Office of Information Technology (OIT).
