Degradation - WolfPrint
WolfPrint service may have been in a degraded state between 10:18 and 10:24 this morning while an emergency configuration change was made for the WolfPrint-BlackAndWhite and WolfPrint-BlackAndWhite-11x17 queues to correct an issue with Grayscale conversion.
Degradation - WolfPrint
Print jobs from managed Windows machines to print.ncsu.edu was in a degraded state after the OS update during the winter break. The issue was caused by a change in how CUPS configuration sets the SSL certificate and key pair to be used by the server and Windows clients were not happy with the invalid certificate that resulted from the change. The correct certificate and key pair have been copied to the new file names used by CUPS without the need to restart the service. The service should be working normally now.
This would have mostly affected lab machines and other managed Windows clients using WolfPrint. The following methods for submitting jobs to WolfPrint would not have been affected:
- Web Print
- Mobility Print
- Printing from managed macOS or Linux workstations
- Printing to the College of Design print servers.

The Mobility Print service will be restarted on each of the WolfPrint servers for an authentication configuration change. This change should resolve authentication issues caused when a client switches connections from one load balanced mobility print server to another. The service should only be down on each server for less than a minute.
Update: Jul 7, 2021 07:17 AM - This change has been completed.
Degradation - WolfPrint
The Departmental PaperCut server had a service restart this morning to add a configuration change to enable async requests from clients. This change was recommended by our PaperCut support vendor after we reported issues seen from the previous upgrade.
While the service appeared to be performing normally after a service restart when the issues were initially reported, we were still seeing client XML RPC errors on the server and the PaperCut service was restarting on nearly an hourly basis.
Degradation - WolfPrint
The Departmental PaperCut server was restarted around 10:25 am to clear up an issue with the Departmental PaperCut server. The server was experiencing higher than normal load and was exceeding a limit on the number of client XMLRPC connections, causing slow performance on the server including looking up and presenting user clients with a list of shared accounts to select when submitting a job.
OIT is monitoring the server for the XMLRPC connection error and has submitted a ticket with our PaperCut Support provider.

OIT will be replacing two WolfPrint servers in the campus data center 2 with VMs. The current hardware is aging and these are the remaining two WolfPrint servers that are not currently running on VMs.
One of the two servers serve as a backup PaperCut application server and the other is one of 3 load balanced print servers. No impact is expected on the WolfPrint service.
Update: 2021-05-18 17:14:21 Install of the two VMS is complete

On Tuesday January 12, 2021 at 5 am, OIT will be upgrading PaperCut on the WolfPrint servers. The upgrade is expected to be completed by 7 am.
WolfPrint services will be unavailable during the upgrade of the PaperCut Application Servers which will be upgraded first and cause the majority of the downtime.
The PaperCut Print Providers will be upgraded next, one at a time, possibly causing print jobs being held on a given Print Provider to not be available for release for a brief period of time.
The PaperCut Client software can be updated on University workstations that use WolfPrint once the ugprade is complete. In some cases, no action will be required for the client to update. Information about updating the client if it is necessary is provided for campus IT Support staff at: https://oit.ncsu.edu/my-it/hardware-software/unity-computer-labs/adding-wolfcopy-printers/
