Initial Password Change KB0015795
Setting up your NC State Account for the first time is a three-part process. You cannot log in to any NC State services until you activate Duo 2FA, set up security questions, and change the password from the default value.
What you will need to get started:
- Your UnityID Username.
- Campus ID Number (also known as Student ID Number or Employee ID Number).
- Your Default Password (sometimes called a Temporary Password).
- Last four digits of your Campus ID number followed by your two-digit birth month and two-digit birthday. For example, if your Campus ID number ends in 6789 and your birthday is January 31st, then your default password would be 67890131.
- At least one device that is valid for use with Duo 2FA (cellphone, tablet, or security key). For the easiest authentication experience, we recommend a smartphone capable of installing apps.
Note: If you had an account with NC State University previously and are now returning, then your account's password will not be the default value. Please try a self-service reset before setting a new password. If you are unable to answer your security questions or you don't have any set up please contact the NC State Help Desk Monday - Friday 8 am to 5 pm at 919-515-4357 for further support with your account.
Setup Duo Mobile, Security Questions, and Answers
NOTE: Do not start this process until you are sure you have enough time to do it in one sitting. Exiting out of the Duo Mobile setup without completing the other steps below may necessitate you calling the Help Desk to unlock the account.
- Go to the Edit Security Questions page.
- Enter your UnityID and your Default Password.
- Select "Start Setup" to begin Duo setup.
- Select your type of device and follow the on-screen instructions to enroll in Duo.
- It is highly recommended to set up the Duo Mobile app to avoid account lockouts.
- If you have a cellphone that is not compatible with installing the Duo Mobile app, select "Mobile Phone" and then "Other (and cell phones)" as your device so that you will not be asked to install the app.
- Once Duo setup is complete, you will be directed to set up your Security Questions.
- Choose and Set 3 questions and answers.
- Select Submit. You will get an acknowledgment message when the Security Questions are set.
Set Your Password
- Go to the Password Change Form.
- Enter your Default Password into the Current Password field.
- Enter your custom password into the New Password field. Re-enter your custom password into the Confirm New Password.
- Select Submit. It may take the Change Form 1-3 minutes to process your password submission. Do not refresh or close the page while it processes. You will get an acknowledgment message when the password is successfully set.
