Gradescope is a tool that can help to increase efficiency and consistency in grading, and can be especially useful in larger classes. Students or faculty can upload handwritten or typed assignments and exams. Faculty can then grade submissions, question by question, without seeing student names attached to particular responses. Graded work can then be electronically returned to students.

Gradescope is available to instructors as a technology preview while DELTA develops expertise with this software. During this time, we are relying on the vendor to directly assist instructors and answer questions. See the "Support for Gradescope" section below.

Gradescope is integrated with Moodle via an LTI integration. This enables students to connect to Gradescope through a Moodle course without signing in a second time, and with no need to create a separate account. The LTI integration also allows for grades to be returned automatically to Moodle.

To add the Gradescope LTI integration in Moodle, follow these instructions.

  1. On the main course page, click the "Turn editing on" button in the upper right.
  2. In one of the topic blocks, click the link to "Add an activity or resource."
  3. On the "All" tab (or another tab where it appears), click the tile for "External tool."
  4. Type in a descriptive Activity name.
  5. In the "Preconfigured tool" menu, select "Gradescope."
  6. Click the "Save and return to course" button.
  7. On the main course page, click the link to the new activity to open gradescope.com and create a new course, or link to an existing one on the Gradescope site.

Here are additional instructions on using Gradescope in Moodle, including how to link the grades.
