Users may want to utilize anonymous grading practices when grading essay questions in a Moodle Quiz activity. Any user with the instructor, instructional support, or teaching assistant role in Moodle can use the "Blind Quiz Grader" role.

This article provides instructions on how to access the "Blind Quiz Grader" role in Moodle, and complete essay grading anonymously.

Using the "Blind Quiz Grader" Role

In order to use the "Blind Quiz Grader" Role, an instructor will need to use the "Switch role to..." action, then manually grade the essay submissions in the Quiz.  Following that, they can return to their standard instructor role.

Accessing the Role
  1. Go to the top right of the Moodle page and select the profile picture and name menu.
  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, select the "Switch role to..." option.
  3. Select the "Blind Quiz Grader" from the list of options.
Grading Essay Submissions
  1. Go to the Moodle quiz.
  2. In the Quiz Menu at top the page, select the "Results" tab. Student names do appear on this page, but will not appear on the grading page.
  3. In the drop-down menu at the top left of the Results page, select the "Manual grading" option.
  4. In the "To grade" column, select "grade" for a question.
  5. Enter points—and optionally, comments—for the answers on the page. Please note that student names do not appear on this page.
  6. Click the "Save and go to next page" button to access another grade.
Returning to Normal Role
  1. Go to the top right of the Moodle page and select the profile picture and name menu.
  2. In the drop-down menu that appears, select "Return to my normal role" from the list of options.
